I am all for local businesses and this one has been around for awhile. I have been here several times over the last 20 years. This is a unique experience, a throw back to the past, a bar like setting where you can get some reasonably good food. Our most recent visit I got the steak, it was good, but not great considering the price. The prices are getting a bit high for what you get.

The place was a ghost town. Although almost all the reviews mentioned George being odd, didn't get that Norman Bates feeling from him. He was complimentary in an old man way and looked like he just moved from Florida with his shirt buttoned way down and his tan. Food was good but portions were small and pricing was high for the size you received. Mind you that they don't take debit or credit. It was more of a bar atmosphere then a restaurant one however their alcohol/ beer selection doesn't necessarily follow that feel. Booths are in need of repair.

Interesting experience. George walked around with his shirt unbuttoned and his chest hair hanging out. He's very proud of his mama and her cooking. It's endearing but a bit creepy. Reminds me of the movie throw Mama from the train. Enter at your own risk!!!

Thank you, George, for appreciating my sense of humor (very similar to yours, which reminds me so much of one of my favorite human beings- Penn Jillette- yes I have met him---- must be why we got along just fine!), for putting on Jimmy Buffett's 'Fruitcakes' album just for me (wearing the tshirt from the current tour) and fixing me (who does not eat beef often!) a chicken fried steak that kept me from starving on my flight back home to Ann Arbor, Michigan! It was a fast, 5 hour visit to SLC and I am SO happy we found Kitty Pappas Steak House! It is exactly the kind of place we like to find when we're on the road! Your homemade hot sauce was fantastic!

I love this place! This is the exception to the rule in Davis County where every eatery is boring, menu items are created in a corporate food laboratory and a sea of redundant french country stucco strip malls with national chain logos has replaced what was Utah's unique dining history. The quest to be like everyone else has turned a taste of Utah into a Jimmy Johns and an Applebee's. Luckily there are a subtle handful of classic area restaurants left! Kitty's is a complete original from the ambiance (somewhere between a David Lynch film and a 50's supper club), food (hand made and prepared with amazing precision and care) and the service (Crazy George is by far the coolest guy who will ever take your order. He's engaging, funny and more importantly not submissive). You've maybe heard not to ask for steak sauce as you will not only insult Kitty and George, but most assuredly get an earful about your gastronomic short comings. To add a pinch of flavor to already great food I do suggest you get onions and garlic on your steak! The Roquefort dressing is house made and it alone is worth the trip! Kitty makes fresh cakes daily and sells slices for dessert. They will usually have 4-7 options and you will not be disappointed! Amazing place! It's the best after ski or golf dinner spot in Davis county! P.S. The beer on tap is so cold it has ice crystals in it!

I don't get the high reviews? I got really sick the last time I ate here, there are plenty of other good spots to chose from, I'd pass on this one.

The bacon was burnt, the bathroom was disgusting, they ONLY take cash, it took an hour to get our food. Will never ever go back.

If I have to explain it you're still not going to get it. You'll either hate it or love it.

My husbandand I try to frequent Kitty Pappas' Steak House every time we head north of Salt Lake City. Kitty's place is our favorite steak house . It is the best place for a steak or burger. The portions are generous and the stesks are hand cut by Crazy George our favorite waiter. The menu features a lot of old time favorites, after all Kitty has been in businesss for 65 years. Kitty does all the cooking and the steaks are done perfectly. Leave room for dessert because they are all home made by Kitty every morning so you know they are fresh. The juke box has to have the greatest and best variety of music in the valley. Crazy George is a magnificent waiter and will answer any questions you may have about any item on the menu and you will leave with a smile on your face. Kitty's is a disappearing bit of Americana so get there before it is gone.

We discovered this place by accident coming back to our hotel from a long day at Outdoor Retailer. We just went again for this OR show and will probably continue the tradition each show. We don't come for the food but it is fine. We come for the sound and feel of the 60's, to laugh at CrazyGeorge, to use the old time powdered soap in the bathroom, and to just experience trailer life. If you come with a smile you will leave with a bigger one, if you come with a frown you will leave with a bigger one.

You don't get what you want, without a war. That makes this place feel like home to me. Mom and son joint. Mom cooks, son give S@#$ to customers. Bring cash, no cards, and order the club or half club steak. Their bread owns too. Oh, and thick skin... or you'll end up one of the confused 1 star guys. Quote from employee George: "Steak sauce? OK, I'll go tell my mom you don't like her steaks"

Typed steak into maps and this place was pretty close. Got there and didn't realize that they don't take cards so I had to get cash. Should have just left but I was hungry. Ordered the big steak it was ok but not great, pan fried steak just isn't as good as something cooked on a grill. It was seasoned ok with some garlic slices. It was a sirloin so it was that random restaurant cut that you can't find anywhere except Denny's and Waffle House. Lighting was a bit to neon-y for my taste. George was a bit aloof or snooty but after I figured that out it didn't bother me. Probably not a place I would head back to anytime soon.

The food was very good. My wife had the pork chop and it was juicy and flavorful. My steak was good also. George the owner played a great selection of music from the 70s and was good enough to write down the songs and artists we listened to. I thought the portions were very in line with the prices. If I get back into town again I would most definitely visit again.

After reading reviews & passing by all the time my husband & I decided to give this place a try. The second I stepped into the back room I got this really creepy feeling about the place. It's a dark, musty dinning room with only one server, George. He was interesting, not your typical waiter to say the least. The food was not that good. I ordered a basic cheeseburger and fries--grease-aholic & flavorless. It took FOREVER to get our food, we were at least waiting 45 mins. The prices for steaks were ridiculous!! Not worth it at all. This place was a one time thing, never going back.

My son and I dined here for the first time recently, and we absolutely loved it! Once you "get" what is being presented here - that is, great food at a unique location, with an even more unique wait staff - then you will truly enjoy the experience. We found Crazy George to be attentive, funny, and just an overall great guy. If you are looking for a fancy location and 5 star ambiance, then I suggest dining elsewhere - as I just don't believe that is really what Kitty Pappas is all about. However, if you are looking for homemade cooking that is obviously lovingly prepared and served with a few laughs, then this is the place for you. Also, as others have mentioned, they don't accept debit or credit cards - so bring cash. That just adds to the charm of this place though, in my humble opinion.

Never in my life have I fled a business in fear, then I went to Kitty Pappas. George isn't unique or funny. He is creepy and for as much Bobby Boucher~esque "Momma" comments he makes, we began to wonder if he wasn't keeping his sainted mother's body in the freezer. Then we began to wonder if we might be next! The food was over priced and we were so freaked out we didn't even make it past taking a sip of the water. Skip the Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Ed Fein experience and go to McDonald's.

My grandparents used to go on dates here when they were just courting. This place is a classic. The atmosphere is unlike any other, George is brash but means no harm. Just pray for snow, don't order anything but mom's Roquefort dressing and NEVER order a steak well done. Best steaks around. Actually, best steaks I've had in my life! In for lunch? Get a steak sandwich. You really can't go wrong here. My favorite place ever!

  • Wendy H.

My husband and I have been there three times in the last two years. The food is good; the steaks are fresh and delicious. Be prepared: the place is unique. The atmosphere is old diner, bar style. Kitty's son is a little unusual, but once you "get him", you'll enjoy his humor and candor.

Horrible service... Ordered the club steak I honestly thought it might be a club foot, then was told by the old woman cooking that I had no taste and wouldn't know good food if my life depended on it.... One of the worst experiences of my life!!

Absolutely the worst meal I have had in Bountiful. AND THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING folks. I mean from the Norman Bates son who waits on table to the tough steak, this place is like a bad horror film with an opening scene in a bikers bar. Skip it and go anywhere else.

Kitty Pappas Steak House has been in business for decades. I've been there once. One meal out of tens of thousands served. I sat at the old school bar, pulled out my City Weekly, and ordered a bacon cheeseburger, waffle fries, and a pint of Bud. The burger was great. Lots of bacon, fresh toppings, and a really nice bun. The fries were absolutely unique. Thicker than most waffle fries, but still hot and crispy. The beer was cold. From my vantage point at the bar, I could see Kitty cooking in the kitchen. I feel my life is a little more complete knowing that I have finally eaten a burger cooked by such a beloved local legend. I toured the dining room, and it was weird and wonderful. So was this meal.

Terrible restaurant experience. My drink was spilled on me; my burger bun, the mustard bottle, and my change when I immediately cashed out had BLOOD on it. When I asked the lady behind the counter if her finger was bleeding she said "no, must be from the steak I just made." Might be ok for a beer but would NEVER wish that food on anyone.

Kitty Pappas is an interesting place to have a great steak and just relax I would do it any time but don't forget to take cash only. NO credit cards or checks.

Don't come here if you don't have a sense of humor or thick skin. Good steak, good cheeseburger and my favorite, breaded steak sandwich. A nice host of creative sauces crafted by George, who by the way is unappologetic for his dry, idealistic perspective of life and how he runs the family restaurant. I truly unique establishment that will never be recreated elsewhere. And yes, confusion due to lack of "getting it" will tend to cause a 1 star review. So sad. Don't forget to feed the jukebox, add an egg, try the house steak sauce and finish with a piece of cake!

Is it a bar? Is it a restaurant? What's with George's attitude? Who knows, who cares. Go there to get a good steak with attitude (george). It's part of the experience. If you can take it.

As a somewhat recent transplant to Davis County, I've been making it a point to visit local institutions in the NSL/Bountiful area. One of my first stops was El Matador, an establishment about which I have a few choice words but, in the interest of fairness (I ate there over a year ago), will defer review of until my next visit (if there is one). For now, I will say only that I wouldn't be surprised to find a version of El Matador's "salsa" on my spaghetti at Robintino's (another future stop on my list). But back to Kitty Pappas. After driving past its bright neon lights for months, I finally had to check the place out. A friend and I stopped by on a Wednesday evening, and my first impression was that the inside was incredibly...pink. The ambience was nice, though--suitable for both loud conversation and solo relaxation. George was a patient and attentive waiter, and despite what earlier reviews have said, he was nothing short of polite during our stay. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries, while my friend ordered the half steak. The food arrived promptly, and everything was delicious. The burger was just the right size, and the fries were thick and crispy. I didn't try my friend's dish, but he seemed to enjoy it, and I was surprised at the very generous portions. After George named off six or seven types of cake that were available that evening, we made sure to save room for dessert. My friend's pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting was yummy, as was my slice of chocolate and coffee cake. The very intense coffee flavor may not be for everyone, but I loved it. It was $2.50 well-spent. All in all, I very much enjoyed my visit to Kitty Pappas and would definitely go back, if only to sample the other kinds of cake. The food was a solid three stars, dessert was deserving of another half-star, and the service from Crazy George filled in the rest. :)

Wow, I was okay with the "throwback" until our server started talking. He was crude, had body odor and called me a "Nancy" because I didn't eat all of the griddle fried, tasteless (although fresh) steak. I had to apologize to my date for taking her to the Bates Motel Steakhouse. My advice, would always be "go local" but, don't go to Kitty and papa's for dinner.

The food is okay, the Establishment is a historical monument in David county, & George (server and son of the owner), are unique.... But he really is a dick. I'm not sure if it's part of his charm or not, but I feel it detracts from the food.... The don't accept credit cards and take cash or check only, so be ready for that... The food is average at best... sorry guys, I want to give you another star, but others people like ranch dressing and you shouldn't give them crap for ordering what they want.... (I won't return)

I have lived in Davis county most of my life. Kitty Papa's was always talked about being good food. After years of driving by we, finally decided to give it a try. Wow this has to be the WORST food in the county!! I'm baffled how anyone would go back after eating a dinner at this place. The steak was very tough! The salad was drenched in dressing to cover up its brown edges. Best of all George the son and waiter was sweating on the food. When my wife asked for steak sauce so we could choke down the steak, he went ballistic on her. It's hard to ruined an already terrible night but George did it!. If you ever think of going to this place, THINK AGAIN, I've eaten at every place in Bountiful, Woods Cross and Davis county, and EVERYWHERE ELSE IS BETTER THEN KITTY PAPAS! That is unless you're looking for lousy food that you end up leaving on the plate because it's so horrible. In that case this place can't be beat.

Drove by looking for a bite one day, stopped in for a beer and a burger with a fried egg that literally made my heart sing with joy. That about all I have to say about that.

So, a buddy of mine and I were taking a road trip and were on our home from the Grand Canyon. We decided to take a pit stop in Salt Lake City, pretty starved from the drive, so we just pulled off the freeway and figured we'd stop wherever looked decent. This was the first place... when we entered, it was one of those classical TV moments when you walk into like a biker bar or something. I swear everybody turned to look at us and it seemed like the jukebox stopped. We didn't see a menu anywhere and no one seemed to host, actually, it looked as if the dining room was in the back or something? We figured that we walked into the wrong place and had better make our way to the door. Strange. I don't know if this is like a private bar or what, but it was definitely an eerie experience. We ended up at the Denny's across the street-ish, which was terrible, go figure.... Thanks for listening.

This is as good as it gets, old school, last of a dying breed of one of a kind roadhouses, quarter jukebox, good burgers and fries, Kitty still baking many varieties of cakes, how about Orange cake with mandarin oranges and orange frosting, I am a huge neon fan, lots of neon, two pinballs in front. Go to relax and remember and to feel authentic.

Meh. As far as local goes, it is ok. For quality and value, go elsewhere.
